Why do we Fly? Soaring the steady lift-band surrounding proud cliffs and mountains in a paraglider or hang glider is a pure thrill, an awesome experience, which is incomparable to any typical sport or recreation I know... …but leaving that lift, breaking away from the mountain and venturing into the open sky, betting your flight on the determination to find a rising bubble of heated air into which to penetrate and ride towards the clouds, exploiting knowledge, feel and luck to make decisions that demand commitment and often courage; that’s beyond the scope of my words. Several years ago I was mesmerised while watching eagles thermalling, circling high over my head, soaring gracefully and serenely towards the heavens. I was inspired; my passion enflamed. I wanted to taste flight. Prepare for take-off... We'll never know which man or woman was the first member of our evolving species to look up to the sky in awe and longing, tracing the path of a soaring bird circling serenely above, and dream of being that winged creature of Nature, tasting flight for even one moment. Leonardo da Vinci was one such dreamer whose enlightened mind created blue-prints for flying wings and machines back in the 15th Century. He imagined the compulsion many of us feel quite accurately… ‘for once you have tasted flight you shall walk with your eyes bound skywards, for there you have been and there you long to return’ Different people take to the sky for different reasons:
